If a family has money to burn, then his strategy may be not be "a distasteful and loathsome way to maneuver", but in addition to being a financial burden to the vast majority of American families, it hurts other students who could have been taken off a waitlist, and it hurts colleges trying to plan for their incoming class. Perhaps Mr. Hemphill wrote this post as a tongue-in-cheek solution to the problem, but that's not the way I read it.
