The 2009 Tacoma College & Career Fair was a big success! We had about 175 colleges and about 2500 visitors! I haven’t seen the final official list of colleges, but for now you can see the last update at tiny.cc/Tacoma_Fair_List.

I made these graphs from data on the NCAA web site (see the url at the end of this post) in response to an email I received from another counselor this morning. It’s no surprise that so many young people, especially young men, think professional sports will be their ticket to prosperity. Too frequently, those with the strongest belief in their ability to beat the odds are those least willing to work hard in the classroom. I hope you find this useful.

I’m trying to decide if I should keep using this bolg, or just use the one on my website. For now, I’ll keep using both for now. Here’s the RSS for the blog on my Your College Fit site – yourcollegefit.com/YCF/Blog/rss.xml

We’re up to about 125 colleges and there are still more that have expressed an interest and may still register. Here’s a link to a map from downtown Tacoma to the University of Puget Sound’s Tennis Pavilion where the fair will be held on Monday, October 19th, from 5PM until 8PM.

While putting together a database of college contacts to use to invite colleges to the 2nd Tacoma College & Career Fair, I came across another consortium, the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Their web site is http://www.aicad.org/. If you’re interested in finding an art college look at their site. A quick list of members is located on Wikipedia at http://bit.ly/AICAD. By the way, the Tacoma College & Career Fair will be held on October 19th at the University of Puget Sound. Here’s a link with a bit more infomation: http://bit.ly/Tacoma_Fair.

On September 29, 2008 the Tacoma Public Schools sponsored the first annual Tacoma College & Career Fair hosted by the University of Puget Sound. Everyone was excited by the turnout, both by colleges and by students and families. There were 97 presenters and more than 1200 students and parents. We had originally planned to hold the fair in the UPS Fieldhouse, but had to move it to a large party tent outside Wyatt Hall. The weather was perfect for late September in the Pacific Northwest, clear, dry, about 75 degrees. What a great way to start a new tradition!

I’ve added some new NCAA Initial Eligibility forms to my school web page. One is my new NCAA Freshman Eligibility Standards Worksheet, and the other is the NCAA’s Quick Reference Sheet for Initial Eligibility.
